Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Santa Ana Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Santa Ana typically runs between $165 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad housing, the intercom board, or both. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most Santa Ana homeowners discover the failure the hard way: the gate works fine from the remote inside the car, but the keypad outside the driveway goes dead, or the intercom crackles so badly the visitor’s voice is unintelligible.

The first thing we check is whether the keypad itself failed or whether moisture got into the control board behind it. In Santa Ana’s coastal air and hard-water irrigation overspray, we see corrosion on keypad backplates far more often than actual button failure. That distinction matters, because replacing a keypad when the board is corroded means you’ll be replacing the keypad again in eight months. Adrian Vance has been documenting failures like this since 2014, and the pattern holds: water entry, not wear, is what kills Ghost Controls keypads in this climate.

If your keypad lights up but won’t accept the PIN, or the intercom powers on but you hear only static, call us at (657) 286-4793. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a keypad swap or a board-level repair, and we’ll put the written price in your hand before any work starts.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Most Ghost Controls gate openers sold in the last decade use one of two keypad styles: the AXDP wireless keypad (the rectangular, two-button model with the gray weather cover) or the older DPK series hardwired keypad with the raised rubber buttons. The intercom side is almost always the Ghost Controls GCI-1 intercom module, which pairs with the keypad through the opener’s radio receiver on the 318 MHz frequency. If your keypad has a small antenna wire coming off the back of the board, that’s the wireless AXDP; if it has a four-conductor wire run through the gate post, that’s the DPK.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha most Santa Ana owners run into: the AXDP keypad will bind to any Ghost Controls opener from 2016 forward, but it will not reliably bind to openers that shipped before the AXDP firmware update in that year. If you have an older Ghost Controls motor and a new keypad, the keypad may flash “learn mode failed” and refuse to pair. We see this at least twice a month. The fix is usually a firmware flash on the opener board, not a replacement keypad, and that’s a $75 service on its own, not a new part. We would rather tell you that upfront than sell you a keypad that won’t bind.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Ghost Controls OEM keypads run about $30 to $60 more than the common aftermarket equivalents, and for the keypad itself the aftermarket parts are usually fine. The intercom module is a different story. Aftermarket GCI-1 replacements are hit-or-miss on audio clarity, and we’ve had to replace two aftermarket intercom boards under warranty in the last year where the OEM unit would have lasted. We stock both, and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for your opener’s age before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • The keypad backlight flickers or goes dim. This usually means the keypad’s internal seal has failed and moisture is wicking across the LED circuit. The buttons may still work for weeks, but the board is corroding from the inside out.
  • The keypad accepts the PIN but the gate doesn’t move. If the remote still opens the gate, the keypad’s transmitter is dead while the opener receiver is fine. That’s a keypad replacement, not an opener problem, and it’s a $165 to $210 job with the part.
  • The intercom buzzes constantly, even when no one is at the gate. This is almost always a ground fault in the intercom’s power feed or a failed capacitor on the intercom board. In Santa Ana’s irrigation-heavy neighborhoods, we also find the intercom wiring spliced where sprinkler water has been pooling for years.
  • The intercom voice cuts in and out like a bad cell call. The GCI-1 module uses a small RF transceiver, and when it starts to fail, the audio drops packets. This is early-stage board failure. We can often replace just the transceiver chip, which keeps the cost under $200 total.
  • The keypad works fine, but the intercom is completely dead. This is the most common combo failure. The keypad and intercom share a power tap on some Ghost Controls models, so a dead intercom with a working keypad points to a blown intercom power regulator, not a power supply issue.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Santa Ana, installed Ghost Controls keypad replacement runs $165 to $210. Intercom module replacement runs $180 to $280. If we’re doing both at the same time, the combined job is usually $295 to $420, discounted from doing them separately because the labor overlaps. These are flat, written prices that include the part, the installation, the programming, and the documentation we leave with you.

What drives the range: whether you have an OEM or aftermarket part going in, whether the existing wiring is reusable or needs a new run through the gate post, and whether we’re also flashing the opener firmware to match a newer keypad. We don’t add on surprise fees for programming or “diagnosis.” The price on the written estimate is the price on the invoice. Under Haven Standard Clause 1, that number is in your hand before a single screw comes out of the old keypad.

Every Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new keypad fails or the intercom develops a fault within a year, we replace it at no additional charge. No argument, no prorating, no expiration within that window.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable with low-voltage wiring, replacing a Ghost Controls AXDP keypad yourself is a reasonable afternoon project. It runs on 12 volts DC, the keypad mounts with two screws, and the learn-mode pairing takes about four minutes. There’s no high voltage at the keypad, and the risk is limited to getting the pairing sequence wrong, which is frustrating but not dangerous. The intercom module is similarly low-voltage.

Where DIY goes wrong for Santa Ana homeowners is usually the wiring inside the gate post. Ghost Controls intercoms are often wired through the same conduit as the gate motor’s power feed, and a homeowner who splices into the wrong pair can short out the opener’s control board. That’s a $200 to $400 mistake. If your keypad or intercom wiring is hardwired through the post rather than wireless, call us at (657) 286-4793 before you open the splice box. We’d rather give you a free assessment over the phone than have you replace a control board you didn’t need to touch.

And if the keypad is wireless and the gate is older than 2016, the firmware pairing issue we described above is not something you can solve from the keypad. That requires a programming tool on the opener board, which we carry on the truck.
